A memorable 2021 is not only for all of us but also for disadvantaged children in Vietnam. A year with many times of long day social distancing, making them unable to go to school, missing out on a whole semester due to lack of learning equipment, the family was exhausted from the epidemic, stuck in the city alone, the whole family infected with COVID, or most tragically, lost their parent.

Those pains will still be persistent, the current difficulties in life still cannot be over as the consequences of the pandemic are so severe. But these children have the right to end the year 2021 with less sadness and more hope for the new year.

Click on the photos on the tree above to discover the stories of some of the kids that Saigon Children’s Charity is supporting, to learn about their stories. Here are five stories that represent many other disadvantaged children in Vietnam during this crisis.

All of your donations will be put towards saigonchildren’s four programmes focusing on removing barriers to education for Vietnamese underprivileged children. Together, we can make this Tet the most memorable one ever for these kids and many others.

Nhu Y

Nhu Y has to miss almost the entire semester because there was no way to access the study.

Y lives with her grandmother in Hau Giang. When the epidemic broke out, her school started to switch to online learning, but the family could not afford to buy her a simple smartphone. Access to study is even more difficult when households at both ends of the street have people infected with COVID-19. They have to put up the isolation lines, making it impossible for Y to go to school or meet teachers and friends to receive homework.

Hoang Dung

Hoang Dung

Hoang Dung’s father died years ago, and his mother worked as a bike patcher on the side of the road to take care of the two children.

Dung is a student at Hy Vong School for the Deaf in Binh Thanh. The tuition fee of the two brothers is more than 2 million/month. Their mother does everything to take care of them even though her back was weak with constant pain. During the lockdown, Dung’s mother could not work at all.  Dung’s family also got COVID and all had to go for treatment.

Thu Lien

Lien is living alone in Saigon, because of the pandemic, she is stuck and cannot return to her hometown.

Thu Lien’s hometown is in Dong Nai. Her parents died when she was young, her oldest sister borrowed a large amount of money to go abroad to work three years ago in the hope of helping the family, and her other sister works as a nurse at a nursing station. While going to school, Lien had to work to live on her own. The loneliness of being stuck in the middle of the city was even greater when she herself was infected with COVID and was forced to isolate at home, with no one by her side during times of illness.

Dung & Duc

Tri Dung and Tri Duc the siblings are children participating in saigonchildren’s free early intervention project for children with autism.

In the middle of the latest pandemic wave, Dung and Duc’s family spent two weeks seriously ill with COVID. Their mother at that time find some hard times breathing but still tried her best to cook and take care of the two brothers. Once, she was cooking porridge but could not breathe and collapsed. Illness is like that, but she still tries to be patient and take care of her health. Because if she had to go to the hospital, no one would be able to take care of Dung and Duc. Particularly, Tri Duc was born prematurely, his lungs were very weak, his mother even had to buy an oxygen ventilator in installments because the field hospital was overloaded at that time. “

Ngoc Tien

The pandemic has taken away from Ngoc Tien the father she loves the most.

On weekdays, Ngoc Tien’s father drove a traditional motorbike taxi, while her mother helps with the housework by the hour. At the peak of the pandemic in Saigon, her aunt and uncle were infected with COVID and then transmit it to Tien’s mother. Her father then went to take care of his wife at the hospital and got sick. Unexpectedly, Tien’s father became seriously ill, within 3-4 days he was in a critical condition and had to be hospitalised. Although he was taken to the hospital, on August 17, the doctor called to tell his family that her father had not survived. This sad news comes at a time when Tien is also infected with COVID and is being treated at home.
